A fantastic past week!

The entire staff room is so quiet now cos everyone has to attend a general meeting with the exception of Tom and me... and cos Tom has taken the entire week off as his parents are visiting, I am alone in the office, and it is really quite nice for a change!

Yesterday was the oosouji day (大掃除)and here, the teachers change seats every new school year here, so can you imagine the ruckus and the dust??? Vaccuum cleaners, wipes, trash, papers, rubbish... The Japanese are so organised that there is even a designated day and time for this to take place and I was like.. 'WOW'. I cannot imagine how it would be like if Singapore schools practice this too. Before I left Bedok North, the clearing and packing too me an entire week!

But actually, I think this practice is kinda good too. This forces everyone to CLEAN their tables and the staff room and now the place is much neater and tidier and in a sense, everyone is ready and anticipating a great year ahead. Also, it gives the teachers a chance to get to know many other colleagues better. :)

Well, actually I started this post some time ago but din get to complete it cos I was just so pooped out! Ahahha... This last week, I was actually quite busy and the first big thing that happened was ....

Part 1 - Pamela comes to Kobe
I had such an enjoyable time with Pamela simply just fellowshipping, chit-chatting, shopping, sigh-seeing... It is her first time in Kobe and yeah, God is really good.. Who can imagine that 6 years ago, when we first met in CHC while bringing Nozo and his team around Singapore that 6 years later, we will meet here in Japan, and then going to Nozo's church this time round?

Pamela is really a very very sweet girl. She is so motherly and love just flows out of her. The few days I spent with her, I too have learnt many things from her. She exemplifies someone with the Fruit of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.

Well, we talked about many things, and cos it's been so long since we last chatted, this time, we really got to know each other much better and ahha.. she asked me so many questions about my past relationships, crushes and of course my present relationship. It was actually quite fun reminiscing my younger days... ahahha.. One thing both of us agree we so miss about being home is that it is so so difficult to have such wonderful fellowship and sharing here. In Singapore, it is so easy. For instance, you could just call a close friend, meet her, sit down over either a cuppa or Ya Kun and talk!! Here in Japan, I so miss that. There are of course people I can talk to or go out with, but it's never the same doing it with someone who truly knows you.. you understand what I mean? It's the quality of the friendship and communion.

Well, let the picts speak for themselves. We took so so so many pictures!

Part 2 - Church Spring Camp

People here love camps. There are so many different camps, and so this year, I had the chance to join KBC for a spring camp in Himeji.

Stayed in one of the cabins... It's nice! It's got this European woody feel to it - a first time for me! And the name of this area is...

Suponikku Park

I only joined them during the first night and second day due to work committments but it was great nonetheless. It was so funny. The first night, I arrived with Keshi around 8 plus and was really really famished but upon reaching, the night session of PnW and preaching was about to begin, so there was no time to eat.. and and and... I grew hungrier and hungrier by the minute and was trying really hard not to focus on my growling stomach and and and... and then at one point in time while Nozo was preaching, we had to turn to this verse.

Phil 4:11-13 (NLT)
Not that I was ever in need, for I have learned how to be content with whatever I have. I know how to live on almost nothing or with everything. I have learned the secret of living in every situation, whether it is with a full stomach or empty, with plenty or little. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength.

God is indeed such a wonderful encourager! Wahhahaha :) And dinner that night was a huge, steamy plate of Curry Rice, one of my favourites!

Ok, some picts of the camp now.

Vivid Girls taking a break!

Oooooiiiishiiiii Yakiniku BBQ on the second day for dinner

I took some time off alone while the kids were playing games and surveyed the land myself. Below are some preserved, rebuilt buildings from a many many jidais (時代)ago.

I have so many picts to show! Heez.

Outside one old house

Haha.. this whole area looks like a movie set! I have never really seen such landscapes before and was quite fascinated. Reminds me of Jin Yong Wu Xia Xiao Shuo... Yang Guo and Xiao Long Nu!

And beautiful pottery on display... :)

And just 2 more picts for this Part 2.

Leafy veges and bulbous turnips for sale
The people living in this area plant their own crops and sell them, and how do they do it? They display the produce out in the open, and trust you to place the money into a bucket at the side after you choose what you wanna buy! There is no one in the vicinity as I took this picture and I peered into the bucket... some¥there.
The Japanese are an honest and trustworthy race. Amazing. :) However, I think there is always deficit still, cos I saw another sign that says that it is important to remember to pay for what you take. :)

And finally, Part 3 - Laksa Time

I cooked laksa for my colleagues and I so enjoyed myself. :)
Dear Steveywonder, thank you for the laksa stuff you sent over from Singapore... cos it was such a blessing to my colleagues here! The laksa really tasted so delicious and yummy.

Having fun!

The Boiling Cauldron!
It was so 懐かしいいいいいい。。。I really miss the taste of laksa!

Posing with some senseis

And you know what happened after the laksa lunch? 2 other teachers decided to do a 'collaboro' (Japanese lang for 'collaboration') and made marmalade cheesecake! It was so fun! Ikoma sensei made the cheesecake and Sawada sensei made the marmalade and a few of us had it for tea. Little things like this make me smile! :)

Ikoma sensei and Sawada sensei :-D

And... the wonderful collaboro - Marmalade Cheesecake

This post must have been one of my longest entries. Actually writing it doesn't take much time, but the selection of pictures and uploading of them take aeons! And even as I end this post, wahhahaha, the teachers are still at the meeting... I am just so thankful that I dun have to attend the meeting, cos it's all in Japanese and I will be literally 'Lost in Translation'! And then I remember all the looooong meetings back in BNSS!

While time permits...

I have about half an hour to finish this, so here's a quick quick quick update of the last couple of days! I had so much fun and enjoyed myself tremendously and well, when you are enjoying yourself, time flies by and wham... it's already mid-week!

Spring is here and this marks a fresh new beginning for the Japanese. It is the time again when life springs forth after the gloomy and cold winter season and I feel so happy!! Really it's true that when the days start getting longer, the weather becomes 晴れ。。。so do my emotions! I have been feeling so 明るい。。。so genki. :)

The last cold spells were finally over.. (or so I hope) and 21st March, known as 春分の日 (Shunbun no hi) , is an official holiday where the length of the day and night are equal. This also somehow marks the fact that winter is officially over and spring is ushered in, and temperatures start rising. Yay! And indeed it has been the case. I still remember how during winter, I was wondering how I would survive the cold, and then January, then Feb... then everyone told me that Feb would be the coldest month... err... waking up shivering in the morning... wrapped up like a bak zhang... puffed up and still cold... hiding under the kotatsu... seeking refuge in buses and trains... my best friend being the stoves and heaters... ahha.. the list could just go on... and then March came... n then now April!

Well, hahaha.. i meant to write about wat i did the last few days, but sigh... so overwhelmed by the spring of life, blossoms, flowers... oh... hanami.. i just can't stop!

Ok... show you all some flowers and pretty stuff first.

Pictures in the garden

Mega Playground!

I am on Cloud Nine!
And the next few picts are taken on a very foggy, misty day at about 8.30am on the Sunday just passed. I think i once told someone i lived in the clouds... here's evidence. haha... errr, cos I am quite high up, about 600m above sea level, so if you are on the ground, I am really living in the clouds! Haha...

Side-tracking a little... this reminds me of my childhood fantasies while reading Enid Blyton. You remember the strange tree, I think it's called the Magic Faraway Tree! She wrote about where there are many different worlds you could enter into or find yourself lost in? Like Topsy-Turvy land, or getting yourself drenched from the washing woman's pail or something like that... and some other weird places? :D

An incongruously congruous blend of happy Elmo, basketball hoop, a black car, a white house and the beautiful about-to-blossom dunno-wat-name flowers.... wahhahahaha.

And I haven't written about my adventures the last few days... Time doesn't permit! Gotta go off soon... Yay!! Going to a tennis camp now and then church camp tmr!

WHITE DAY

White Day is true!!! Ahhahaha... I really really didn't expect returned gifts, so my joy was doubled this morning... and ahha... really, it's so funny... When the people came to give me the gifts, I could really do nothing but just to accept them with HUGE 'Thank You's... Man... ahha... so much goodies on my table now... I have to take a pic and show all of you!

My supervisor, Fujiike sensei, gave me this - his favourite Tim Tam chocos from Australia. I will certainly enjoy it! Thank you!

And yes... very happy and touched to read the letters and notes too. Thank you very much Kouhoku teachers.

甲北の先生へ ありがとうね。私は本当に嬉しかったです。この日本の習慣 とても面白いと思う!皆の寛大は ありがとうね。。。:-D

Blessings abound

And last night, I was blessed with this from a couple and another friend I met in the gym. They are awesome people. They always send me home whenever they see me in the gym and I totally appreciate their kindness and concern. Their kind gestures and always offering help really make my life easier... cos it's really a loooooong walk home, and then it's so freezing cold somemore. Well, yesterday, they gave me this that they made and jokingly told me that it's been in the fridge for a year.. and that makes it even more delicious, and I took it in and believed it! Later, I found out that that's absolutely untrue.

Introducing to you Kobe's famous food in the spring season - いかなごの釘に (Ikanagonokugini)

At first sight, they look like 'ikan billis' or 'kang hee gia'. I love the taste! There are 3 different distinct tastes here, one sweet, one salty and the last, spicy! Goes well with rice and apparently, with beer too.

My Hanko
Also, I received this really unique gift from the cell group and absolutely love it! It's called a 'hanko' or 'inkan' and everyone owns one. It's common practice to use this in Japan in place of signatures or thumb prints on official documents. You know, I have always always wanted something like that... looks so cool, so antiquated, so fun to use... (images of bazaars and pasar malams during CNY customising your 'chop' come to mind) Well, I really always wanted the chop, but felt that it was just a tad too expensive to purchase, and in Singapore, what use would it be for me?

But... look at this!!!! It's so beautifully made, with my name in Chinese characters. There's such an autumny feeling to this gift with the leaves and petals... and it's in orange... so apt for me since my name is Ah-Cen. whahahahah. What a thoughtful and well-made gift. Was told I could chop to my heart's desire as well... can chop up to 4000 times!! Haha... so though I won't use it on official documents, you'd see the chop on bday cards and other stuff!

Haiya... what else can I say? Above are just excerpts of some of the blessings I received recently. There are many many many more.... Despite the cold here, the warmth of the Japanese more than make up for it.... Thank you once again!

Specially for Yuka

This is a post specially dedicated to Yuka... Thank you dear Yuka, for our friendship. :)

To me, there are many different levels of friendships that you could have with someone. Some people just hit it off so well the first time they meet... Others take some time to warm up, but the friendship gets better over time. Some people take an extreme dislike to each other from the beginning, but then end up being the best of pals; others just remain very casual hi-bye acquaintances. :)

To me, a friend is God-sent. Because our priorities change, we meet new people and build new relationships daily and we move on in life, it is inevitable that some relationships kinda fade away or deteriorate over time and others get strengthened. A friend is God-sent because even if that friend is in my life just for that season and even if I had been very close to her during that point in time only, but we have somewhat drifted apart now, I know it's never a waste because through that friend, God must have wanted me to learn something, show me something or shape and mould me. There must have been a reason or purpose why our paths crossed. The energy and effort taken to build have not gone to waste and I would certainly hope that I have made a difference in my friend's life too. Pastor Phil preached last year that 10% of our destiny lies within ourselves and the remaining 90% is really intertwined with the relationships that you choose to form with the people around you! We have to be careful and wise in maintaining our relationships because we simply can't just go round trying to be everyone's best friend... No time n energy for that!

I met Yuka last year some time around October or November at KICC. KICC stands for Kobe International Community Centre and this is a place where foreigners can seek assistance and form support groups. For me, I was KICC's No.1 ardent supporter then and would make the trip there several times a week to have Japanese conversational classes with my volunteers, and at the same time, teach EL to them.

Actually Yuka and I see each other quite often, but we never really talked... and one day, we did. Ahha.. she is one of those 'instant hits'. We just chatted on and on, and wondered why we hadn't spoken to each other earlier on! She told me she had really wanted to talk to me even before that, but then somehow we just didn't talk.

Anyway, over Starbucks, over MacDonalds, over dinners, we got to know each other better. She is a very determined girl and one day, she wants to be an EL teacher to children. And she is really very good in her EL too. She works and studies EL at the same time, and it is certainly not easy coping with the challenges of both the workplace and examinations. Kudos really to her courage and perseverance. Yuka is also very open and friendly... Over time, we just got to know each other better and better.

Last week, I invited Yuka for service and she went with me, giving her heart to the Lord... I am so happy for her. No words can sufficiently describe my joy... :)

And I have learnt so much from her too. Haha... thank you ne.. for bringing me around to find the right kind of facial wash for my 油ぽい face, and also for introducing me to the very ooiishiiiii ramen! Ramen in Japan is a staple, especially during the cold winter. In my last post, I talked about sipping hot coffee in cold, cold freezing weather. Eating a hot, soupy bowl of Ramen brings about the same MU, if not more! This shop is near Hankyu Sannomiya station, and serves cheap and delicious ramen, with eat-all-you-want servings of kimchii and bamboo shoots.

This is miso-based ramen, with fried rice. Servings are large! And we both wiped everything clean. :) The price? A reasonable 750¥! That's about $10.

After that, we headed to MacDonalds for dessert... n I had one of the best chocolate pies in my life for only a 100¥. I didn't take any picture of it, but it is really really nice. Just think apple pie but instead, it's filled with hot, thick chocolate syrup with bite-sized chocolate bits. The crust is hot and crunchy, and as you bite into it, the chocolate oozes out and fills your mouth..Mmmmmm... (Eyes closed, savouring every single bite...) Simply heavenly...

Sannomiya Centre Gai - A popular shopping street lined with shops at both sides
Yeah, we were like excited girls. We had decided to bring along our cameras so we could snap the night away!

ありがとうね。日曜日またね。:)
